Director Dan Trachtenberg’s latest entry into the sci-fi franchise, Predator: Badlands, completely inverts the series’ premise, delivering an action-adventure story told from the perspective of the alien hunter itself. The film is a departure from previous installments, expanding the lore of the Yautja species and introducing an unlikely partnership on a deadly, futuristic alien world.
The Runt’s Vow and Exile
The story begins on Yautja Prime, the homeworld of the Predators. Here, we meet Dek, a young Yautja who is considered a physically undersized ‘runt’ by his fiercely traditional and ruthless father, Njohrr, the clan chief. Dek yearns to prove himself and earn the honour of the Yautja warrior cloak, a symbol of a successful first hunt.
After a traumatic confrontation where Njohrr attempts to execute Dek for his perceived weakness, Dek is rescued by his older brother, Kwei, who sacrifices himself to ensure Dek’s escape. Fueled by a need for vengeance against his father and a desperate desire to prove his worth, Dek flees Yautja Prime on a mission to hunt the most formidable, legendary creature in the galaxy: the Kalisk. He journeys to the hostile, terraformed planet Genna, known throughout the galaxy as the “Death Planet.”
An Unlikely Alliance
Upon crash-landing on Genna, Dek finds himself immediately overwhelmed by the planet’s lethal environment—everything from the flora to the fauna is deadly. He soon encounters Thia, a damaged synthetic from the sinister Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Thia, who is missing her lower body after a previous encounter, is intelligent and knowledgeable about Genna’s dangers.
Thia offers Dek a deal: she will use her knowledge to guide him to the Kalisk’s lair if he agrees to carry her torso on his back (which he reluctantly accepts, viewing her only as a “tool”) and help her recover her missing ‘sister’ synthetic, Tessa. Thia also subtly challenges Dek’s rigid Yautja code, introducing him to the concept of the ‘alpha wolf’ being the protector of the pack rather than the lone killer.
The Conflict and the Ultimate Trophy
Their journey across Genna is fraught with peril, but their bond grows, especially after they adopt an unexpected, small native creature named Bud. Meanwhile, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, led by the reactivated and militant Tessa, is also hunting the Kalisk, intending to capture it for their bioweapons division.
The climax involves a major battle at the Weyland-Yutani facility. Dek, now fully embracing a new code of honor that prioritizes his new ‘pack,’ abandons his trophy hunt for the Kalisk to rescue Thia. He learns that Bud is, in fact, the offspring of the Kalisk. Using improvised, organic weapons, Dek unleashes his full warrior ferocity against Tessa’s synthetic forces.
In the end, Dek frees the Kalisk, which takes a final, explosive revenge on the antagonistic Tessa. Dek returns to Yautja Prime, where he confronts and kills his father, Njohrr, in front of the clan, cementing his vengeance and a new definition of warrior strength. Dek rejects his clan, instead proclaiming Thia and a much larger Bud as his true family, before preparing for a new, unknown threat that arrives from space.
